A large outdoor chalkboard can provide many learning benefits. They can be used to explore each of these areas.
Literacy. Using a large outdoor chalkboard is a fantastic way to encourage literacy development in EYFS. As children are beginning to find a rhythm with writing letters, a chalkboard allows them to do this on a bigger scale and experiment with alphabet formation.Mathematics. Chalkboards give little ones the chance to practice their number formations, and can easily wipe it clean if written the wrong way!Expressive arts and design. Chalkboards are brilliant for letting children in EYFS mark make and freestyle a perception of something. When questioning them about their work, they can simply add to it or re-create by rubbing off and starting again. The chalk allows for this versatility when using Q&A and lets a dialogue flow easily.Physical development. What seems like simple task of learning how to hold a pen or pencil, its not. Fine motor skills need to be developed to learning this task and to improve handwriting. Gripping chalk is different due gripping a pen or pencil due to the texture. Allow children this opportunity with different-sized chalk pieces and boards.Communication and language development. There is something about chalk drawing that is novel, and that can often mean children engage more in this. For children who struggle to speak or are non-verbal, chalkboard activities can be a way through this. Communication through drawing is a staple tool for many SEND pupils, so trying to encourage communication through chalkboard activities could open a much-needed conversation.Understanding the world. Lots of chalkboard activities take place outside as it offers more space and many settings have boards placed on walls. If there is outdoor learning taking place, the chalkboards can be a great place for children to doodle or write what they are learning about.Personal, social and emotional. For any child that struggles to describe their emotions or shows frustrations, one-to-one time using chalkboards is a way for children to express how they feel using a different type of writing instrument. It can get them out of the learning environment and encourage different dialogues to happen.
