Thurlstone Primary School is a small, friendly, rural primary school located in the peaceful village of Thurlstone, in the picturesque foothills of the Pennines. They are within half an hour’s drive of Sheffield, Wakefield, Barnsley and a stone’s throw away from Holmfirth and ‘The Last of the Summerwine’ country.

They have six mixed age classes with 148 children on role.

The school is committed to the development of the child in a whole school community. They provide a stimulating, safe environment and a high quality education which encourages confidence, independence and friendship. Their creative curriculum aims to develop mature, caring, enterprising individuals who have a clear role in society. They nurture enjoyment of learning by celebrating achievement and enthusiasm.

The school was rated as Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted in November 2015.

The Brief:

The Headteacher, Charlotte Gibbons, was clear from the outset that they are a small school with limited money available to do projects like this.  Charlotte and the school worked really hard to raise a pot of funding to do works to the playground.  It was really important that the school got this right and made the impact they required.  Charlotte also emphasised she needed a reliable contractor that she could trust to do a high quality and long lasting project.

This project required a significant amount of excavation and clearance of an area before anything could be installed.  There was an existing pond in one area which the school wanted to be filled in to create a new surface.  The other space was full of shrubbery and small trees with a very uneven grass surface.  To provide brand new surfacing with the appropriate groundworks and new equipment, on a limited budget, was going to be a big challenge.

We submitted our design proposal and price and within a couple of weeks, we received the fantastic news that ESP had been chosen as their preferred contractor.  We got this email from the Headteacher:

“Hi Andrew.

I’ve had a chance to look at the designs with my colleagues and we would like to go with the rubber mulch option please. We’d just like to make a change to the some of the items you’ve included though.

I’ll phone tomorrow to discuss and organise when you’re going to do the work.

Thanks so much for your designs and service so far.

Kind regards

Charlie Gibbins

Headteacher “
