Edna G Olds Academy is an inner city school situated within the vibrant community of Lenton, Nottingham. There are currently 227 pupils on roll who truly reflect the diverse cultural heritage of their wonderful local community, for example, 73% of the children speak an additional language other than English.

Developing a culture of excellence whereby the primary focus is upon exceptional teaching and learning provision ensures that pupils will flourish and get to realise their potential. All of their children are encouraged to think creatively, question and embed a philosophy of high standards in order to achieve their goals. The school ethos promotes high personal, social and moral values, independence, self-discipline and resilience. At Edna G Olds Academy they want to inspire their pupils to excel in every aspect of their lives.

ESP was invited in to school to discuss the development of two separate play areas.  Both the areas were tarmac spaces. One was a well-used playground, which had an old existing trim trail, and the other was completely blank area that wasn’t really used for play…until now!!

The school really liked their previous trim trail and so did the children.  The area was enjoyed by the children and promoted a lot of healthy physical activity.  Therefore, the brief was to remove the existing trim trial and design a brand new trim trail. This one needed to have more challenge than the previous one and to provide a new artificial grass surface underneath.  The school wanted more green space instead of tarmac.

Due to the popularity of the trim trail, the school wanted an additional one.  We therefore designed a second trim trail to go into the space that was not really used as a play area. A new trim trail, combined with a nice seated quiet area really brought this space to life.  Rubber Mulch was installed under the trim trail as the area suffered with a few tree roots and this is the ideal surface to combat that problem.  The quiet area had more artificial grass laid on top of the existing tarmac.

If you are interested in speaking with ESP about your playground, please do not hesitate to get in touch.  We offer a completely FREE playground design and consultation service.
