Bolton Parish C of E Primary School contacted ESP Play to transform an area of soil at the new site into an exciting extension of the early year’s classroom.

School: Bolton Parish C of E Primary

Location: Chadwick Street, Bolton, Greater Manchester

Bolton Parish C of E Primary School is a new school that opened in September 2019 following a decade in which governors had struggled to maintain the old school building in Kestor Street to a safe and habitable standard. Plans for the new building were first drawn up in 2016 when the school won a share of £2bn pot offered by the government. The new multi million pound site has a modern interior along with a large outdoor space for the children to play.

The school’s mission is to unite in the desire to empower learners to build the academic skills, personal values and mindset to succeed and become respected role models within their community.

In June 2019, Bolton Parish C of E Primary contacted ESP Play because they wanted to create an outdoor classroom for their EYFS area that catered for the 7 areas of learning within the curriculum.

The brief

The early years area is used by children aged 3-5. The main priority for the school was to surface as much of the soil area as possible as well as adding in some equipment whilst keeping to the budget of 27k. They do have children that attend the school that are in a wheelchair and so the area had to be easily accessible too. We had to work around the trees in the area because they were under conservation, but this worked well because they wanted the area to look natural.

The project

The project started with a meeting at the new school site to discuss the school’s requirement’s and to carry out a survey of the area. ESP Play then created a design combining the schools wish list and ensuring it was within the 27k budget. The design included various types of surfacing in order to create different textures, a sandpit which doubled up as a stage with a chalk board back drop and freestanding benches, a small shelter with seating and planters, a wheelchair accessible mud kitchen, messy table, mud trough, storage and a climbing hut which combines imaginative play along with aiding the development of gross motor skills.

The outcome

Take a look at the before and after photo’s below, after all a picture speaks a thousand words. The area has been transformed into a sustainable and stimulating outdoor classroom. The school were so happy with their new area that they asked us to come back to install a multi use sports area in another part of the school too. The new modern building combined with the new outdoor space creates the perfect school for any child.
