Bardsey Primary School is in the very privileged position of having extensive grounds that overlook the Yorkshire countryside. Based in Weatherby, Leeds, this stunning primary school is committed to the continued development of its curriculum offer for the children. One key focus for the school was to use the outdoor space further and provide their pupils with meaningful opportunities to learn outdoors.
Our vision for the play area was to create a stunning outdoor school playground that would seamlessly blend into the natural rural environment. Creating a natural-looking playground was a critical objective for the design. Using high-quality laminated timber, the ESP PLAY design team created multiple open-ended play and learning opportunities using specially designed playground equipment. No product had one use. Each item enables the children to be imaginative with their play and their learning. Whether that be climbing, den making, role play, problem-solving activities, or construction.
Included in this playground development:
- Physical development targeting gross and fine motor skills
- A natural water feature to encourage problem-solving skills, understanding weather seasons, developing vocabulary and communication skills
- A growing area for plants and veg
- A wildlife corner to provide added connection to nature
- Digging, messy play and construction area using pullies, sand, and mud
- Tunnels to encourage crawling to help with physical co-ordination skills but also to enhance a child’s ability to track words on a page when reading
- A large stage area for role play and performances
- A stunning lean-to canopy to provide continuous provision immediately from the indoor classroom
